History of the Credit Union Mercy Federal Credit Union was Chartered on April 12, 1976 with fourteen employees of St. Joseph Hospital being the charter members. They elected a board of directors, a supervisory committee and a credit committee and began accepting members.

Sister M. Cornile, RSM from the hospital assisted. Also, present were Mr. Berkeley Holmes, Representing the National Credit Union Administration, Mr. Thomas Nelson, representing the Georgia Credit Union League and Mr. James Caldwell representing the Credit Union National Association, each of whom assisted with obtaining the charter.
